🌍 Important Update: UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

From 25 February 2026, many visitors who previously travelled to the UK without a visa will now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before they can board their flight, ferry or train. This applies to travellers from 85 visa‑free countries, including the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, UAE, Saudi Arabia and all EU member states.

What is an ETA?

An ETA is a quick online travel authorisation linked electronically to your passport.
It allows you to visit the UK for tourism, business, short study, family visits or transit, for stays of up to six months.

Who does not need an ETA?

  • British and Irish citizens, including dual nationals (must travel on a British or Irish passport).
  • Travellers who already need a visa.
  • People with UK settled or pre‑settled status.

How much does it cost? The ETA currently costs £16 and is valid for two years or until your passport expires (whichever comes first).

How to apply: You can apply online or via the UK ETA app. Most applications are approved within minutes, though you should allow up to 3 working days.
