Celebration experience
Nurse Catherine not only cares for patients but for nature too.
DDRC Healthcare nurse Katherine (Kat) works with our wonderful patients attending for wound care and Hypberaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). However in celebration of her 40th birthday, Kat decided to take a well earned break and treat herself to something rather special.
“For my 40th birthday I decided to treat myself, not to a spa day or champagne breakfast but to a solo holiday travelling Borneo. It is a place I have always wanted to visit , so this seemed like the perfect excuse.
I had very little planned apart from my first few night’s accommodation in Kuching. I really wanted the opportunity to be spontaneous and plan my trip as I went along and listen to recommendations from other travellers. Being able to just make your mind up last minute or even change it at a whim is something you hardly ever get to do with a young family and I loved that freedom.
I had the most incredible time, hiking alone in jungles, staying in national parks and I nearly even saw the largest flower in the world bloom ( it flowered the day I left !). I tasted amazing local cuisine and encountered warm and friendly locals everywhere I went.
The definite highlights were seeing the orangutans , hiking through giant cave networks where Sir David Attenborough has been and a chance to get a spot of scuba diving in at the end of the trip.
It was the most incredible experience and I really hope to return again but next time to share the delights of Borneo with the rest of my family.
