DDRC Plans for 2020
Major plans for 2020 to include diving events, a major fundraising campaign and milestone celebrations for DDRC and Plymouth.
2020 is already shaping up to be an exciting year in Plymouth (England). The city , where we are based, is leading commemorations of the 400th anniversary of the epic sailing of the ‘Mayflower’ ship from Plymouth to America. On board were the pilgrims who founded the modern United States.
Mayflower 400 begins in November 2019 and concludes in November 2020. All the latest information on a huge range of cultural, community, sports and science based activities can be found on the Mayflower400 website or by following the hashtag #Mayflower2020 .
Celebrating our 40th Anniversary
The year 2020 is also a significant one for this Plymouth based medical charity, as DDRC Healthcare will be celebrating our 40th anniversary.
Our charity was created in 1980, from the humble beginnings of a drafty boat shed next to the sea at Bovisand, where a group of local divers had created a small hyperbaric facility.
In 1996 we moved to a purpose built facility adjacent to Derriford Hospital, as the inaugural residents of what is now called Plymouth Science Park.
We have since become a major centre for research into diving medicine and hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy. Patients are treated here for conditions such as decompression illness, radiation tissue damage, diabetic foot ulcers and gas embolism. Our diver emergency helpline and diver safety education programmes are provided by a multi-disciplinary team of specialist doctors, nurses, researchers and trainers.
How Will DDRC Celebrate in 2020?
The best gift that we could have to celebrate our 40th anniversary would be to buy a new hyperbaric chamber, which would enable us to improve our patient experience and capacity.
Watch this space for news of a major fundraising campaign which we will be launching soon, asking for the diving community to help us with our fundraising efforts.
We will also be hosting the Annual Scientific Meeting of the British Hyperbaric Association (BHA) here in Plymouth, welcoming delegates from around the world.
In addition, we are starting to plan a Diving Conference that will bring together a line up of incredible speakers to share their experiences related to diving and diving medicine.
Do keep your eye on our website and social media for all the latest news of our plans for fundraising and events.
