What does DDRC stand for? Diving Diseases Research Centre.
Where is it? Tamar
Science Park, Research Way, Plymouth and at St Joseph's hospital, Newport, South Wales. Who/what does it treat? Patients with Radiation Tissue Damage, Diabetic Ulcers, Osteomyelitis, Soft Tissue Damage. Divers suffering from the bends.
How does it treat and in what? At St Joseph's patients breathe pure oxygen whilst under pressure in a monoplace (single
occupancy) chamber.
How many treatments? Dependant on progress. Usually 20-40.
Do & Don'ts Cotton clothing only (Centre will supply). No watches, lighters or metal framed glasses (Centre can supply plastic frames.)
Medical Care DDRC has its own doctors and nurses.
Transport & Accommodation Can be arranged by DDRC once you are discharged from hospital.
What can be done for claustrophobia and/or fear of the process? Nurse can attend until you are comfortable with the procedure. What does it feel like as a patient for the first time? Apprehension
of a unknown procedure is normal, but you will have everything explained to you by the staff
before your first treatment.
Will I get wet?
No, water is not involved in the treatment.
Does the chamber move? No.
