Support totalling more than £400 000 has been agreed by Cancer Research UK and the Department of Health for a multicentre research trial. The primary goal of the trial is to test the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in restoring normal bowel function to patients who have received successful radiotherapy for their pelvic cancer, but who go on to suffer long term side effects from the radiotherapy.
Radiotherapy is prescribed for an increasing number of patients with pelvic cancers. Latest figures for the UK indicate that twelve thousand patients annually undergo radiotherapy for the treatment of pelvic cancers which include prostate cancer, cervical cancer, bowel cancer, bladder cancer and several other cancer types. Virtually all patients undergoing radiotherapy to the pelvic region develop adverse symptoms. The majority resolve with time, but some are progressive and considered irreversible, interfering with daily activities and quality of life. As the number of UK patients undergoing successful radiotherapy for pelvic cancer increases, the incidence of long term side effects becomes more common.
Recruitment will commence in the summer after further details have been released on the DDRC website.
