The DDRC Remote Emergency Medic Technician (REMT) course is aimed at diving professionals, medical personnel, and those engaged working in remote destinations, expeditions, and liveaboards. It has been validated by the National Board of Diving & Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT).
The course is designed to increase the students’ knowledge and understanding of the skills and techniques used in dealing with pre-hospital management of diving accidents and emergencies in remote locations. Attendance will also help the diver specialise in the recognition and treatment of DCI and safe use of hyperbaric chambers.
The 5 day DDRC course consists of approximately 30 hours theory and around 20 hours practical work within our Centre. It also includes the opportrunity to visit a busy, local A+E Department.
Subjects to be covered include:
- Diving Physics and Physiology
- Barotrauma and related problems
- Use of hyperbaric chambers, introduction to basic operator and attendant skills
- Care of casualites on site and during transportation
- Patient assessment including neurological examination
- Recognition& Treatment of Decompression Illness
- Selection and use of medical and associated equipment taken to remote sites
- Care and treatment of the patient in the hyperbaric environment
- Advanced resuscitation skills, including airway management, oxygen administration, fluid administration and use of defibrillators
- Dive Planning & Risk Assessment
- Liaison with medical and emergency services
- Medical record keeping
REMT Course Pre-Requisites:
- A background in diving to an acceptable ‘support’ level (e.g. PADI Divemaster or equivalent experience)
- First Aid At Work (or equivalent) including skills such as oxygen administration, AED and airway management
- Emergency medical skills as testified by demonstration of experience and/or relevant qualification
- Participants will be required to produce evidence of an in-date 'fitness to dive' medical and their current diving log-book
