Diver medical training was introduced by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) over ten years ago. Then in 1997 the Health & Safety Executive handed the scheme over to the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) to control.
The Diver Medical Technician (DMT) is a person who will be expected to perform a range of advanced medical techniques in an emergency. The DMT might be expected to assist in the initial diagnosis, tend the patient and administer medication and/or fluids to take control of the situation until a Diving Doctor arrives. This is particularly useful when planning diving projects in remote areas.

Increasingly sophisticated equipment and larger chamber complexes have been developed to meet the need for divers to work at depth.

The starting point for this fascinating and interesting career is to become an Assistant Life Support Technician; all entrants must undergo and pass an approved IMCA basic course.

The DDRC Remote Emergency Medic Technician (REMT) course is aimed at diving professionals, medical personnel, and those engaged working in remote destinations, expeditions, and liveaboards. It has been validated by the National Board of Diving & Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT).
The course is designed to increase the students’ knowledge and understanding of the skills and techniques used in dealing with pre-hospital management of diving accidents and emergencies in remote locations. Attendance will also help the diver specialise in the recognition and treatment of DCI and safe use of hyperbaric chambers.
