General and Health and Safety Courses
Manual Handling Course
More than a third of all over-three-day injuries reported each year to the HSE and local authorities are caused by manual handling. These injuries can occur wherever people are at work. This course aims to increase candidates awareness of, and provide training in the issues surrounding manual handling, particularly the identification of a manual handling risk, the use of acceptable manual handling skills and the development of safe systems of work. At the end of the course each candidate will be able to:
Understand the legal responsibilities with regard to manual handling.
Demonstrate an understanding of the basic anatomy of the spine and, state the risks due to incorrect manual handling operations.
Identify correct and incorrect manual handling techniques within the work environment.
Select appropriate tools and equipment to aid manual handling situations.
Recognise his/her own limitations in relation to manual handling.
Risk Assessment
Risk assessment is an integral part of workplace safety, protecting both workers and businesses, as well as being necessary to comply with the law. This workshop will help give candidates the knowledge and skills essential in identifying the risks that realistically have the potential to cause harm in the workplace. It will then go on to highlight the simple but effective measures that can be used to either eliminate or control the more commonly encountered risks, within the scope of being reasonably practical. At the end of the course each candidate will be able to:
Know what constitutes a hazard and the different methods available for identifying them
Determine who potentially may be harmed by a hazard and to what degree
Estimate the level of risk that a hazard represents
Record and report on findings
Decide what measures can be put in place to reduce the risk of harm
Review and re-evaluate all of the above
Emergency First Response
Emergency First Response is a comprehensive and innovative CPR and first aid program. The course consists of two modules which may be studied together or separately: Emergency First Response Primary Care (CPR) and Emergency First Response Secondary Care (First Aid). Together, these courses provide extensive instruction in CPR and first aid, together with essential skills such as Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use and emergency oxygen administration.
The Emergency First Response Program is composed of two courses, EFR Primary Care and EFR Secondary Care. Both courses follow the same priorities of care used by professional rescuers. EFR Primary Care assumes local emergency medical support is available. EFR Secondary Care assumes local emergency medical support is delayed or unavailable.
Emergency First Response Primary Care (CPR)
This course covers emergency care for most life threatening emergencies. Participants focus on primary care through knowledge development, skill development and scenario practise. Some of the skills developed include:
Primary Assessment
Rescue Breathing and CPR
Serious Bleeding Management
Shock Management
Spinal Injury Management
Automated External Defibrillator Orientation
Emergency Oxygen Use
Emergency First Response Secondary Care (First Aid)
This course covers injuries or illnesses that are not immediately life threatening or when local medical assistance is not available. Participants focus on secondary assessment and appropriate first aid through knowledge and skill development along with realistic scenario practise. Some of the skills developed include:
Injury Assessment
Illness Assessment
Bandaging and Splinting for Dislocations and Fractures
EFR First Aid at Work
The Emergency First Response (EFR) First Aid at Work (Great Britain) course is a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) approved first aid course for the purpose of meeting the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. This programme meets the statutory needs of employers in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland needing at least one First Aider on the premises.
First aid at work training courses are normally delivered over 4 days and first aid at work re-qualification training is normally delivered over 2 days.
The Emergency First Response First Aid at Work (Great Britain) course is customised to UK Resuscitation Council basic life support protocols and nationally accepted first aid protocols and is based upon the instructor led delivery of the Emergency First Response Primary Care and Secondary Care modules instructor digital lesson guides. Modules on Caring for Specific Illnesses and Injuries, and First Aid in the Workplace compliment these. The course has its own materials including participant and instructor manuals, and benefits from the use of the existing Emergency First Response Primary Care and Secondary Care video.
