Prison Walk raises funds for DDRC PDF Print E-mail

Prison nurse Tim Merrick decided to repay his treatment at the Diving Diseases Research Centre with a sponsored walk which raised over £1300.

Tim, a diver with 11 years experience, suffered ‘the bends’ after an equipment failure during a dive in Bigbury Bay in July 2007 and was treated by the team at DDRC before making a full recovery.

Tim was very impressed with the care he received and how well other patients were being looked after at the Hyperbaric Medical Centre.

41 year-old Tim said:

“Although I’m a nurse, I was unaware not Hyperbaric Chamber treatment for any other condition than decompression illness.  During my week at DDRC I was the only diver there and I was amazed how so many other conditions respond to HBO (Hyperbaric Oxygen).”

Tim’s walk involved his diving mate Paul Rowlands who also works in one of Her Majesty’s Prisons and the two donned diving gear to walk the 13 miles between HMP Brinsford near Wolverhampton where Tim works and HMP Stafford where Paul works. The two were accompanied by other colleagues and their efforts should be swelling the £1370 already raised for DDRC as soon as it is collected.

Tim added:

“Being treated in the event of a diving accident is something too many divers take for granted.  I hope many more people will become aware of HBO and its wider applications.  We should all be very grateful that DDRC exists.  I certainly am.”
