What is the therapy like?
Compression of the chamber is noisy and gets fairly warm. This takes about 3 minutes as long as you can equalise your ears OK. Then you will be put on oxygen for periods ranging from 20 minutes to an hour. We will get you to write out what exactly happened to you and also get details such as your GP name and address. Books and magazines can be passed in to read and we can also play videos inside the chamber to relieve the boredom.
What if I want to go to the toilet?
Disposable urinals or a commode can be passed into the entry lock where you will be given privacy.
Can I eat or drink?
If you are not vomiting or feeling nauseated you can eat and drink. Fluid will be encouraged and food will be passed into the chamber at times to coincide with your air breaks (periods off oxygen). If you cannot drink intravenous fluids will be prescribed by the doctor.
What happens at the end of the therapy?
You will be assessed again by the doctor and accommodation if necessary will be sorted out for you. Further treatments will be requested by the doctor if necessary.
When can I dive again?
The doctor will advise you on when you can dive again. Severity of the illness and circumstances surrounding it will be taken into account. |
