Diver medical training was introduced by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) over ten years ago. Then in 1997 the Health & Safety Executive handed the scheme over to the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) to control.
The Diver Medical Technician (DMT) is a person who will be expected to perform a range of advanced medical techniques in an emergency. The DMT might be expected to assist in the initial diagnosis, tend the patient and administer medication and/or fluids to take control of the situation until a Diving Doctor arrives. This is particularly useful when planning diving projects in remote areas.
The DDRC course consists of 60 hours theory and around 30 hours practical work within our Centre and at Derriford hospital's A+E, HDU, ICU and other departments, right on our doorstep. As one of the busiest Hyperbaric Centres in the UK there may be many opportunities to experience the treatment of casualties during your stay here.
Subjects to be covered include:
- Airway management
- Respiratory & Cardiac arrest
- Wound management
- Oxygen Administration and Shock management
- Caring for casualties on site and during Transportation
- Diving Accidents
- Intravenous Infusion
- Care and Treatment of the patient in the Hyperbaric Environment
- Medical Record keeping and Liaison with Medical Services
- Use of Medical Equipment in Remote Sites
The Course includes a HSE First Aid at Work and Oxygen Administration qualification required under the Approved Codes of Practice set down in the 1997 Diving at Work Regulations.

All DDRC DMT courses have full IMCA approval and accreditation.
For the full DMT course the training takes place over 10 working days.
The DMT Refresher course takes place over 5 working days.
