What is Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) therapy?
Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) therapy is a means of providing additional oxygen to body tissues. During HBO treatment the patient breathes 100% oxygen, intermittently, usually through a hood or mask, whilst inside a pressurised chamber.
What can Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) therapy be used to treat?
At DDRC Healthcare we only use HBO to treat those conditions for which there is a sufficient evidence base. A detailed list of the indications and conditions that we CAN treat can be found here.
The majority of conditions that we treat fall into three categories:
(1) Emergencies: decompression illness (DCI), also known as 'the bends', and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning
(2) Long-term side-effects of radiotherapy
(3) Poor wound healing, including diabetic foot ulcers
How many patients do you treat with HBO?
In 2015/16 we treated 101 patients. 42 of these were treated for decompression illness, 0 for carbon monoxide poisoning, 49 for radiation tissue damage and 10 for problem wounds. Please bear in mind that for each routine patient (ie those not being treated for DCI or CO poisoning) treatments can be for up to 8 weeks (40 sessions).

How is HBO therapy funded and how do I access it?
Most of our patients have their treatment funded through the NHS but we are also able to treat privately funded patients.

Together with our Research Team, we also participate in clinical trials, which may also provide an appropriate treatment option for patients with certain conditions.
